I have traveled extensively, and this has given me an opportunity to paint
in many locations around the world. I have found that traveling to another
country is always a stimulating experience because it brings a new dimension
to my painting. I especially enjoyed painting in Provence because of the
unique quality of the light. It is evident why many of the Impressionists,
including Monet, Van Gogh, and Cezanne settled in France to paint. The light
there is different than anywhere else in the world. One of the great thrills
of my life has been to experience painting in many of the same locations
where many of these great artists set up their easels and painted. I will
never forget the feeling of painting along the edge of Monet’s beautiful
water lily garden. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
Recently, by referring to an extensive archive of photos from my travels, I
have begun to revisit these places with a series of new works. In addition
to paintings of Europe, I am currently working on some scenes from a trip to
Morocco. The style of the buildings in Fez, Casablanca, or the Telouet
Casbah, the character of the light, and a sense of the culture itself call
for a different style of painting. I also enjoy creating large travel
paintings for collectors of my work. These are usually commissioned works
based on a small plein air painting I made on location or an oil sketch that
I work up from photographs I have taken while on location. The image is then
produced on canvas on a scale that fits the collector’s needs. |
